How to build confidence from within using feedback that actually helps

How to build confidence from within using feedback that actually helps

You don’t need more praise to feel confident.
You need clarity.

That kind of confidence doesn’t come from waiting to be noticed. It comes from knowing what you do well, where you want to grow, and being bold enough to own your progress.

One of the most overlooked ways to build that inner confidence?

Intentional feedback.

I know feedback can feel incredibly uncomfortable. Especially if you’ve ever been on the receiving end of unconstructive vague, negative, or unhelpful comments. Your brain can take you straight to the thoughts of ‘what if they tell me I’m no good’.

That kind of fear stops you from asking for feedback because nobody wants to be given that type of feedback.

Instead, we want to be given constructive feedback that actually helps us to grow and improve ourselves.

When you ask the right way, with the right intention, you gain insight into your strengths, how others experience you, and where your next level of growth is.

How to ask for feedback in a way that builds confidence

1. Know what you want feedback on
Be specific. Do you want insight on your leadership style? A recent project? Your presence in meetings? How you show up?
Clarity makes it easier for others to give you meaningful responses.

2. Choose the right person
Think about who’s in the best position to offer useful feedback.
This could be a manager, mentor, colleague, or client.
Ask someone who knows your work and wants to see you grow.

3. Set the scene
Feedback is valuable so you need to treat it that way.
Decide when the best time to ask for feedback is, will it be in person? A linkedin message, a WhatsApp message, a survey? If you’re asking for feedback from a busy individual, booking time in the calendar is a useful way of getting in person feedback.

4. Listen and take action
Take notes. Reflect on what was said. And ask yourself:
What can I do with this information to grow?
Remember confidence grows through becoming more self aware and taking action.

5. Make it a habit
Don’t wait for people to give you feedback. Be proactive in asking for feedback as it directly fuels your growth.
The more you ask for feedback, the more confident you become in your strengths and direction.

Why this works

When you ask for feedback intentionally, you learn what others already see in you.
You start recognising your strengths. You let go of second-guessing. You step into your next level.

Confidence isn’t something you wait for. It’s something you build.
